Pine Tree Power Speaker Series: Investor-owned Utilities in Maine, Explained

On November 7th, Maine voters will be asked, “Do you want to create a new power company governed by an elected board to acquire and operate existing for-profit electricity transmission and distribution facilities in Maine?”

At Maine Youth for Climate Justice, we do! We believe a nonprofit utility company owned by and for Mainers will benefit young people, future generations, and the climate. This October, we're hosting a three part speaker series organized by youth for youth leading up to the election so we can all learn more about consumer-owned utilities and how Maine would benefit from one.

Join us for the first call on Tuesday October 3rd at 6pm for our speaker series introduction. We'll explore what the problem is right now and why investor-owned utilities aren't working for Maine. We'll find out why Mainers have such high energy burdens and why investor-owned utilities make renewable energy proliferation more difficult.

Both youth and adult allies are welcome to attend this speaker series. Please note that we will prioritize youth questions on these calls. Register here to join us on October 3rd!

Our first speaker is Lucy Hochschartner - Pine Tree Power’s deputy campaign manager

She grew up in a rural area and saw firsthand how extractive industries could decimate local communities. This led to a passion for bringing people together to build powerful, grassroots movements. She knows community-owned power is the most important step we can take toward economic and climate justice. When she’s not out knocking doors, you can find her skiing or running around Portland, ME.
